Free Knitting Printable: Yarn Diary

Like many knitters, I was a long-time Ravelry user. I loved cataloging all my makes and seeing what others had

A free printable yarn diary with yarn scraps and ball band taped into place and a space for notes at the bottom. The yarn diary is inside a sheet protector in a binder and surrounded by brown knitting on steel needles, pink and yellow roses, and a minty green teacup with white polka dots that is full of milky tea.

done.

But no tool is perfect, and Ravelry had one serious drawback all along: I couldn’t touch anything.

For me, that was a huge bummer. Knitting is such a tactile experience, and I’m not ashamed to admit that I will sometimes sort through my stash just so I can feel it all. I wanted to touch all those pretty yarns in my notebook, and instead I just had ephemeral, digital pictures.

Another problem: I had all these gorgeous ball bands from indie yarn dyers and nowhere to keep them. I filed them in a little box, but I didn’t enjoy that much, and I felt like there had to be a better way.

Then the Ravelry accessibility problem happened last summer (you can read this excellent, regularly updated blog post from Kathleen Sperling for more on that debacle if you’re not caught up). While I’m not physically affected by the changes to Ravelry’s site designs, many of my beloved friends are.

I began to think about what alternatives were out there.

So I started fussing with this project last summer, changing designs and playing with them and adjusting them. I came up with three versions: an ornate black and white, a colorful floral, and a simple blue version. Scroll down for photos of the three different versions and links to download whichever version you’d like to use (or all three, help yourself!). I’ll have more in the future, including some landscape variations if there’s an appetite for that. Drop me a note in the comments and let me know what you’d like to see.

Three Different Versions of the Printable Yarn Diary

This free printable yarn diary helps me keep track of yarn scraps and ball bands from special projects. It has two rectangles for taping the yarn and ball bands, plus a spot for tracking when I bought the yarn, where, and any notes. This version features ornate, Victorian-style scrollwork around the various boxes.
